I spent weeks working in the section of the field housing two sows with their litters. One a Saddleback and the other an English Lop. The pigs were very curious and were quite formidable, especially the huge sows, as they raced towards me. Luckily the owner had forewarned me and I had armed myself with bags of apples from our ancient Bramley tree.
I found the pigs highly amusing and intelligent. In spite of their bulk, they seemed to pick their way like ballet dancers across the trip-up-able tussocks and churned-up-clods on incongruously dainty trotters. What caught my eye was every now and then a stray piglet from another litter would try to muscle in on a free feed from another mother.
This pastel was constructed from numerous pencil and wash studies in my sketchbooks.
